Debra Weisberg
Debra Weisberg is active nationally and internationally as both an educator and an artist. She has exhibited at the Paper Biennial in the Netherlands; East Hampton Center for Contemporary Art; Art in General, New York; and in the Boston area, the Art Complex Museum, Duxbury; Danforth Art Museum; DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum; Gallery Kayafas; Mills Gallery, Boston Center for the Arts; Dedee Shattuck Gallery; Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University; and VanDernoot Gallery, Lesley University.
In 2017, Weisberg received a commission from the Facebook office in Cambridge MA to create an eighteen-foot-long site-specific permanent installation. She has twice attended the MacDowell Colony and was awarded an art residency in Can Serrat, outside of Barcelona, Spain, for June, 2009. (Sub)Surface, her forty-foot high installation at DeCordova, won an award for best museum installation from the Boston Art Critics Association (2003).
Weisberg received a Massachusetts Cultural Council fellowship in Drawing in 2008, and she was a Somerville Arts Lottery recipient in 2001, 2004, 2008, and 2015. Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Sonesta Hotel and General Hardware Manufacturing Company in New York. As part of her studio practice, she collaborates regularly with students on large-scale dimensional drawing installations, most recently Somatic (e) SCAPES at Milton Academy, and previously at Wheaton College and St. Paul’s School.
Weisberg teaches at Boston College and Mass College of Art Graduate program, and she is an energetic invited speaker. She has presented “Material Drawing: Exploration and Connectivity,” a talk which examines the material of making, intuition, and accidents in the digital age, at University College, London (2014); at the MIT Graduate School of Architecture and Planning (2014); at the Broad Institute, a biomedical and genomic research center in Cambridge MA (2014); and at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (2018). She holds creativity workshops in corporate settings, and she was an artist in residence at the Meditech Corporation for seven years.
