Matthew Swift Gallery is delighted to present Nadine Boughton reading from her new book of poems on Sunday, December 12th, 2021, at 3pm. She will read for about 45 minutes and remain to sign books, which will be available for the first time at this event.

If your plans change, please let us know by calling the Gallery or replying to your RSVP confirmation email, so that your seats can be offered to others.

Qualities which distinguish Nadine Boughton’s accomplished visual art find compelling expression in her poetry: insight into eras and cultures, an awareness of the sensual body, and a keen alertness to loss. Beneath their memorable images and narratives, these poems—Nadine’s “pockets of pollen”—speak of renewal, earned with the light of honest observation and the selflessness of empathy.

Fierce and graceful, these poems are a strand of crystalline lakes set in deep green forest, revealing with exquisite clarity intimate moments in the poet’s life. In the Lap of Night is a poetic oracle, a sensory tapestry of life from crowning to croning. Nadine’s collection, gathered from thirty years of writing, is a murmuration of starlings weaving back on itself to revisit threads of life again and again. It is like a Cooper’s Hawk on the roof pinnacle, with an expansive view of the yard yet tuned to small movements in any corner.

Nadine Boughton is a poet, collage artist, educator, and coach. Her work is grounded in her study of spiritual traditions, the iconography of the Feminine, and careers as a psychotherapist, photographer, and writer. Nadine has presented her poetry at universities, libraries, conferences, and writing centers. Her visual work is represented by Matthew Swift Gallery in Gloucester MA. Nadine lives in Gloucester with her husband.

Trident Gallery is very pleased to present A Fractured Atlas, the third solo exhibition of new work by Nadine Boughton. After many years of making collages from printed materials from 1950–1962 with digital techniques, A Fractured Atlas exhibition presents two series of hand-cut collages of vintage materials from 1945–1962. The eight collages of “Catalogs of Desire” draw on Montgomery Ward and other catalogs of the era to address themes of materialism and popular culture. The collages of “They All Looked at the Rain” address themes of innocence, nostalgia, and anxiety about the future through subject matter of water in its many forms — oceans, waterfalls, tears. Boughton is deeply conversant with the importance of water to spiritual practices and philosophies through the ages and across cultures, and she is a keen observer of the cultures of yesterday and today, both satiric and nostalgic, a profound humanist who challenges viewers’ assumptions about contemporary art drawing on materials from popular culture.

An opening reception in honor of the artist will be held Saturday, July 6th, 5–7pm.

Boughton will give a talk on the new work Sunday, July 14th, at 4pm.
